Lung Cancer Statistics

Dicing With Death by Stephen Senn,

Dicing With Death by Stephen Senn,
If you think that statistics has nothing to say about what you do or how you could do it better, then you are either wrong or in need of a more interesting job. Stephen Senn explains here how statistics determines many decisions about medical care--from allocating resources for health, to determining which drugs to license, to cause-and-effect in relation to disease. He tackles big themes: clinical trials and the development of medicines, life tables, vaccines and their risks or lack of them, smoking and lung cancer and even the power of prayer. He entertains with puzzles and paradoxes and covers the lives of famous statistical pioneers. By the end of the book the reader will see how reasoning with probability is essential to making rational decisions in medicine, and how and when it can guide us when faced with choices that impact on our health and/or life. Stephen Senn has been a Professor of Pharmaceutical and Health Statistics at the University College of London since 1995. In 2001 he won George C. Challis Award of the University of Florida for contributions to biostatistics. Senn's previous two books are Statistical Issues in Drug Development (Wiley, 1997) and Cross-over Trials in Clinical Research (Wiley, 1993). He is the member of seven editorial boards including Statistics in Medicine and Pharmaceutical Statistics.

Spectroscopic Measurement: An Introduction to the Fundamentals by Mark A. Linne, X
Spectroscopic Measurement: An Introduction to the Fundamentals by Mark A. Linne, X
Description Electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, molecular spectroscopy, optics and radiation form the foundations of the field. On top of these rest the techniques applying the fundamentals (e.g. Emission Spectroscopy, Laser Induced Fluorescence, Raman Spectroscopy). This book contains the basic topics associated with optical spectroscopic techniques. About 40 major sources are distilled into one book, so researchers can read and fully comprehend specific optical spectroscopy techniques without visiting many sources. Importance of This Topic Optical diagnostics are widely used in combustion research. Ideas first proposed here are now applied in other fields, including reacting flows for materials production (CVD reactors, oxidation reactors and some plasma work), atmospheric sensing, measuring constituents of exhaled human breath (to indicate stress in airway passages and the lungs and hence, e.g., provide a very early indicator of lung cancer). Why This Title To understand what they are doing. Researchers not formally trained who apply spectroscopy in their research need the detail in this book to ensure accuracy of their technique or to develop more sophisticated measurements. Time is valuable and future research will benefit. Learning "on the fly" can involve direct information on a specific diagnostic technique rather than gaining the background necessary to go into further depth.

Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation - Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation is a British medical research charity dedicated to the curing of lung cancer. They also work with programs designed to help people to quit smoking.

Lung cancer - Lung cancer is a malignant tumour of the lungs. Most commonly it is bronchogenic carcinoma (about 90%).

Richard Dimbleby Cancer Fund - The Richard Dimbleby Cancer Fund is a charity founded in the memory of Richard Dimbleby, a British journalist and broadcaster, who died in 1965 aged only fifty two from lung cancer. Before his funeral, his family requested well-wishers to make donations to the new fund rather than sending flowers.

Mom's Cancer - Mom's Cancer is a webcomic created by writer Brian Fies. The comic is an autobiographical story dealing with his mother's fight against metastatic lung cancer, as well as his family's reactions to it.
